Named after a graceful African antelope, the Chevrolet Impala is widely credited for the muscle car craze of the 1960s.
The Impala began as the top option level on the 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air series and was available only as a 2 door hard top sport coupe and convertible in its introductory year. Following its successful debut in 1958, the Chevy Impala was elevated to top of the line status in 1959.

The Impala nameplates and crossed racing flags were mounted inside the painted insert area of the full length side trim molding. Front fender top ornaments also had rear extensions when compared to the 1959 Chevy Bel Air. Bright metal trim marked the rear trunk deck lid center crease and tail lamp lenses.
It was not until 1927, when General Motors hired designer Harley Earl, that automotive styling and design became important to American automobile manufacturers. Ed Cole, Chevrolet’s chief engineer in the late 1950s, defined the Impala as a “prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen”.
