The 1959 Chevy El Camino was produced in response to the success of the rival 1957 and 1958 Ford Ranchero.

The Ford Ranchero and the 1959 Chevrolet El Camino were based on a passenger car chassis designed to combine big car comfort with the utility of a pickup truck.

Chevy and Ford both believed that country people wanted some style in their pickup trucks.

The 1959 Chevrolet Apache was also new and a popular 1959 Chevy truck.

1959 Chevrolet El Camino

Chevrolet Engineers trimmed the El Camino out in middle of the line Bel Air trim, but the results were still spectacular. However, the 1959 Chevy El Camino's development was rushed, and it was not as successful as the Ford Ranchero, with only about 22,000 units built the first year. The base price of a 1959 Chevrolet El Camino was about $2700.00. Chevrolet dropped the El Camino from the 1961 product line and redesigned it as a Chevelle for the 1964 model year.

When equipped with the right engine and transmission such as the 348 cubic inch 335 horsepower V-8 the El Camino was very quick. Most El Camino's were sold with Chevy's old 235 6 cylinder or the more popular 283 cubic inch 185 horsepower V-8.

One Chevy advertising said the El Camino Combines stunning passenger car styling with the load space of a pickup. Good looks never carried so much weight. Another Chevy El Camino ad said Handiest helper a family ever had...59 Chevy! However, the 1959 Chevy ElCamino was out sold by the 1959 Chevy Apache.
